The Government Delegate to the Limbe Council, Samuel Ebiama Lifanda, Wednesday, June 13, announced that Limbe has been chosen to host a 20,000-seater stadium for the Southwest Province.
Lifanda was speaking at a meeting held in the conference room of the Limbe Council Chambers, with presidents of football clubs and other stakeholders of the sport to brainstorm on a site for the stadium.
Two sites were earmarked: one located on CDC land; a level area covered with aging oil palm trees at the entrance to the town at Mile Four and another, a shrubby but wide expanse of farm land located along the road to Bimbia.Lifanda said information about the chosen site would be forwarded to Yaounde in a week’s time.
The Government Delegate added that the stadium is a joint project between the Government of Cameroon and the Chinese Government. Besides the stadium, Lifanda said a 2,000-seat sports complex will also be constructed in Limbe. The Delegate said it had been agreed that the Limbe Centenary Stadium that was built in 1958 would accommodate the sports complex.
While Limbe will host the Provincial stadium, Lifanda said the Government has decided that Buea and Kumba will have their soccer arenas improved on. »It is a very welcome project and I think it will go a long way to change the face of sports in Cameroon, » Lifanda said.
The Delegate added that the stadium project is nationwide meant to cover all the ten provinces. »What is taking place in Limbe is taking place in just about every other province in Cameroon, » he said.Lifanda said there was yet no information as to the technical details of the 20,000-seater stadium.
