Manchester United are poised to wreck Middlesbrough’s move to make Real Madrid star’s loan deal permanent by clinching an £8m summer transfer, according to reports. Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren had hoped to seal a deal for the 24-year-old Cameroon international after his impressive performances at The Riverside this season.
But Real’s asking price has proved a stumbling block for Boro, as it did for Chelsea when they attempted to clinch a permanent deal last summer.
Now United are understood have opened negotiations with Real, with boss Sir Alex Ferguson earmarking Geremi as the man to boost his midfield next season.
Ferguson is attracted by Geremi’s goalscoring versatility across all the midfield positions, particularly with captain Roy Keane’s massive influence starting to wane.
Middlesbrough had hoped to add Geremi to their squad on a permanent basis, particularly with a summer move planned for Kevin Phillips when Sunderland’s relegation is confirmed.
