That Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o scored a wonderful goal in Mallorca’s 5-1 thumping of Real Madrid over the weekend should surprise no-one. Eto’o has formed a habit of knocking in goals against his former club. It was the fourth goal the Cameroon star has hit against the reigning European champions this season.
First came an early season consolation, as he struck the lone goal in their 1-5 home loss to Madrid.
He then went on to score a brace as Mallorca put Madrid out of the Spanish Cup in January.
And last weekend’s effort completed a solid season’s work for Eto’o against the club that let him go.
Real Madrid brought the young Cameroonian to Europe, after he made his name for Avenir Douala, but Eto’o never managed to impose himself amongst Madrid’s constellation of superstars.
Madrid let him got to Mallorca and Eto’o has used every chance since to prove his former bosses wrong.
As his brother confided to me at a Cameroon team camp, « Samuel is determined to score against Madrid every time he plays them, to show them they made a mistake by not giving him his chance. »
If Eto’o continues his revenge streak, Madrid could be regretting that mistake for years to come.
