Spurs are reported to have signed Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o for £12million, with the deal to be finalised immediately after the World Cup. Mackay told the News of the World: « The deal is as near certain as it gets to being done. « I would expect it to be completed as soon as his World Cup involvement comes to an end. »
Newspaper reports claim the 21-year-old African hitman will put pen-to-paper on a contract at White Hart Lane once his involvement in Japan and Korea is over.
Glenn Hoddle is reported to have moved for Eto’o after failing to persuade Sunderland to part company with Kevin Phillips, though at 21 and with his best years seemingly still ahead of him, Eto’o seems a great signing in what is Hoddle’s transfer record fee splashed out since becoming manager.
Speaking of the deal himself, Eto’o said: « I met Glenn Hoddle and he is a very nice man. I want to join Spurs.
« He was a hero of mine and I like the way his teams play football. »
The player’s agent, Willie Mackay, supported the Cameroon star’s comments about the likelihood of him completing a move to North London.
Eto’o enhanced his reputation by scoring against England in the recent friendly game prior to the finals, and, seemingly in a bid to win over his new army of supporters, the striker said: « I dedicate my goal and my piece of trickery against Sol Campbell to the fans of Tottenham. »
