Patrick Bengondo made the headlines this week in Switzerland scoring three
goals and setting up the fourth as his lower division club upset top division
Grasshoppers Zurich in the Swiss Cup. Samuel Eto’o in Spain, Valery Mezague in
France and Jean Paul Yontcha in Algeria all scored twice in weekend play. In
addition Albert Meyong and Rudolph Douala in Portugal, Guy Feutchine and Joel
Epalle in Greece, Jean Makoun in France, Armand Deumi in Switzerland and Franck
Ongfiang in Tunisia also scored.
Switzerland
Patrick Bengondo of Winterthur of Switzerland’s Challenge League (2nd
Division) was the headline maker this week in Swiss Cup play. Bengondo, who briefly
played for Cameroon’s U-23 team two years ago, started at forward
and scored
three goals as Winterthur beat top division Grasshoppers Zurich 4-2 in the
Swiss Cup. Bengondo scored his goals in the 11th, 24th and 56th minutes and then
set up his club’s final goal in the 61st.
National team centerback Armand Deumi also scored this weekend in the Swiss
Cup, netting a goal in the 44th minute as his team FC Thun defeated minor
league club Perly Certoux 7-1. Jean Pierre Tcheutchoua played central defense for
Aarau as they beat Baulmes 4-1. Augustine Simo entered as a 66th minute sub
for Aarau in midfield and Achille Njanke played forward for Baulmes. Jean
Michel Tchouga started at forward as 2nd Division Luzern beat Concordia Basel 4-2
on penalties after a scoreless tie. Tchouga scored the 4th and decisive
penalty for Luzern. Playing centerback for Baden in their 2-0 loss to Schaffhausen
was Simeon Bedzigui.
Spain
Samuel Eto’o remained the scoring leader in Spain by scoring twice in
Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Osasuna. Eto’o scored two of the easiest goals he’ll
get all year long in this match. In the 46th minute Osasuna’s defenders left
him all alone and he headed in a cross for his opening goal. 6 minutes later a
low cross from the left wing by Silvinho of Barcelona was palmed out by
Osasuna’s goalkeeper into the path of Eto’o who calmly slotted home his 2nd goal of
the night.
Eto’o’s Indomitable Lion forward partner Pierre Achille Webo came
on as a sub in the 55th minute for Osasuna. Carlos Kameni was in goal as
Espanyol lost 1-0 to Celta Vigo. In Spain’s 2nd Division Daniel Ngom Kome came on
as an offensive sub in the 82nd minute of Ciudad de Murcia’s 2-1 win over
Lleida.
France
In France’s Ligue 1, PSG stayed on the tail of league leader Lyon with a 1-0
victory over Nancy. Modeste Mbami started in central midfield for the
Parisian club. Playing in midfield for Nancy, and again producing a fine
performance, was teenager Landry Nguemo. Both Sebastien Bassong, at centerback, and
Herve Tum, at forward, struggled as Metz lost 4-0 to Lyon. Achille Emana played
a good match in midfield for Toulouse as his club drew 1-1 with Bordeaux.
Jean Makoun continued his good play in Lille’s midfield in their 2-0 win over
Nantes. In the 22nd minute of the game Makoun notched Lille’s first goal of
the match. Bill Tchato played a solid game at left back as Nice defeated
Auxerre 1-0. Also playing left back this past week was Lens’ Benoit Assou Ekotto
who played in his club’s 1-1 tie with Troyes. Playing right back was
Stephane M’Bia of Rennes in his club’s 1-0 win over Ajaccio.
In Ligue 2, Valery Mezague scored twice from his midfield position as his
club Montpellier drew 2-2 with Dijon. Mezague netted his goals in the 7th and
59th minutes of the match. In a battle between Ligue 2 top two teams Sedan
defeated Creteil 2-1.
Marcus Mokake entered as a sub at forward for Sedan in the
82nd minute of the game while Eugene Ekobo played centerback and as usual
captained Creteil. Also captaining his team this week was central defender
Patrick Leugueun of Istres. Leugueun formed a Cameroonian central defensive
partnership with Pierre Njanka in their club’s 1-0 win over Bastia. Gilbert Bayiha
was in goal for Grenoble in their 3-0 victory over Gueugnon while Jacques
Momha played left back for Laval in his club’s 2-1 triumph over Amiens.
Germany
In Germany’s Bundesliga, Timothee Atouba played left back for Hamburg in it’s
1-1 tie with Borussia Dortmund played in front of a crowd of 75,000 fans in
Dortmund. In Bundesliga 2, Marcel Mahouve played his 2nd match for his new
club Saarbrucken, starting in midfield as they lost 3-1 to Energie Cottbus.
Cottbus’ striker Francis Kioyo missed the match due to injury.
England
In England’s Premier League Lauren started at right back but struggled a bit
trying to contain Kiki Musampa in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester City. In
England’s version of a 2nd division, Mathias Doumbe played centerback for
Plymouth in their 1-1 draw with Luton while Vincent Pericard entered as a sub at
forward in the final minutes of Sheffield United’s 1-1 tie with Leeds.
Italy
Pierre Wome played left back for Inter Milan as they defeated Udinese 1-0.
In Serie B, Thomas Job Iyock played right side midfield for Cremonese and was
red carded in injury time of his club’s 2-1 loss to Mantova.
Portugal
In Portugal’s Superliga Albert Meyong continues scoring goals. In the 26th
minute Meyong fired from outside the penalty area for his club Belenenses’ only
goal in their 2-1 defeat to Rio Aves. Rodolphe Douala played winger for
Sporting Lisbon in their 2-2 draw with Gil Vicente. Just before halftime Douala
finished off a nice collective move by scoring his club’s opening goal of the
game.
Douala was subbed out after 65 minutes. Veteran goalkeeper William
Andem was once again in the nets for Boavista as they lost 1-0 to Sporting Braga.
In Portugal’s Liga de Honra (2nd Division) Nicolas Alnoudji played a solid
game at defensive midfield as his club Olhanense drew 1-1 with Barreirense.
Coming on as a 85th minute sub at forward for Barreirense was Emmanuel Ayuk.
Clement Beaud also played defnesive midfield in Moreirense’s 2-0 loss to
Portominense before leaving after 65 minutes. William Modipo played centerback for
Aves as they lost 2-1 to Varzim and Yohanna Buba played centerback for Estoril
in his club’s scoreless draw with Santa Clara.
Turkey
Former Cotonsport forward Gustave Bebbe Mbangue made his Turkish league
debut coming on as a reserve in the final 10 minutes of his club Konyaspor’s 1-0
loss to Besiktas. Centerback Rigobert Song and midfielder Alioum Saidou once
again started for league leader Galatasaray as their club drew 1-1 with
Denizlispor where their IL teammate Souleymanou Hamidou was in goal. Xavier Zengue
played in midfield as Ankaragucu won the Turkish capital’s derby 3-2 over
Ankaraspor. Jean Emmanuel Effa Owona came on as a sub at forward at the start of
the 2nd half as his club Malatyaspor lost 3-0 to Fenerbahce.
Greece
Indomitable Lion right side midfielder Guy Feutchine started for PAOK
Salonika as his club defeated Ionikos 6-1. In the 49th minute Feutchine scored a
goal and he also set up a teammate for another strike.
Joel Epalle also played
right side midfield as his club Iraklis defeated Atromitos 2-0. In the 69th
minute Epalle converted a penalty and later passed to a teammate for his club’s
other goal.
Belgium
Mathieu Assou Ekotto played in midfield as Standard Liege stayed in first
place in Belgium with a 1-0 win over Charleroi. Justice Wamfor played the first
73 minutes in midfield for Racing Genk as they beat Mouscron 1-0. Patrice
Noukeu played in midfield for the losing team while Eric Matoukou missed the game
for Genk due to injury. Pius Ndiefi returned from his father’s funeral in
Cameroon and came on as a 67th minute offensive sub for Germinal Beerschot in
their 1-0 loss to FC Brussels.
Russia
Jerry Christian Tchuisse played right back for FK Moscow as his club beat
Zenit St. Petersburg 2-0 in Russia’s Premier League. Serge Branco played the
first half at left back for Shinnik Yaroslavl as they lost 1-0 to Saturn
Romenskaye. Simon Atangana played forward for Terek Grozny as they defeated Dinamo
Moscow 1-0.
Ukraine
Patrick Ebanda was the defensive midfielder for Arsenal Kyiv as they lost 2-0
to Illichevets in Ukraine.
Israel
Emile Mbamba played 90 minutes at forward for Maccabi Petah Tikva as they
played a 0-0 tie with Hapoel Kfar Saba. Joel Tchami played the last 23 minutes
for Hapoel Kfar Saba. Ernest Etchi was at centerback for Ashdod as his club
drew 1-1 with Maccabi Netanya.
Eastern Europe
Mathias Chago started in midfield as Dinamo Zagreb defeated Cibalia 1-0 in
Croatia. In neighboring Serbia & Montenegro, Pierre Boya played forward as
Partizan Belgrade continued their recent struggles losing 3-2 to Vozdavac.
In Bulgaria, Daniel Bekono started at goalkeeper as Beroe lost 1-0 to Marek. In
Poland, Francois Endene Elokan came on as a 65th minute midfield sub as Pogon
Szczecin lost 2-1 to Cracovia. In Latvia, Jean Paul Ndjoumeck played centerback
as Ventspils defeated Dinaburg 3-1.
Scandinavia
In Sweden, the season finished with Malmo losing 1-0 to Hammarby, a loss
which knocked Malmo out of any chance of competing in Europe next season as they
finished in 5th place. Joseph Elanga played left back for Malmo. In Finland
the season ended the previous week and Serge N’Gal’s Inter Turku finished in
5th place in the 14 team league and Marc Ndikumade‘s TP 47 finished in last
place and was relegated. For the season, Serge N’Gal scored 9 goals, tying him
for 6th place in the league scoring charts.
North Africa
In Algeria, forward Jean Paul Yontcha scored two goals for CABBA as his club
beat CS Constantine 3-1. Yontcha scored his goals in the 40th and 73rd
minutes. Stephane Nankop also played forward for CABBA and set up two of his team’s
goals.
Elsewhere new signing Bruno Kameni Njeukam kept goal for CR
Belouizdad in his new club’s 1-0 win over MC Oran. In Tunisia, Esperance Tunis went to
the top of the league standings with a 2-1 win over US Monastir. Esperance’s
game winning goal came in the 30th minute from attacking midfielder Franck
Olivier Ongfiang.
North America
Alain Nkong played attacking midfield for Colorado Rapids as they played a
scoreless tie with FC Dallas in the first leg of the league quarterfinals.
South America
In Uruguay, Duplex Kamga started in midfield for Wanderers in their 1-1 tie
with Deportivo Colonia. Alain Yombi at right back and Abdul Njankou at
centerback played for Plaza Colonia as they lost 3-0 to Rocha.
