In a busy week of action around the globe Samuel Eto’o scored twice for Barcelona over the weekend while Guy Feutchine in Greece, Jean Pierre Tchetchoua in Switzerland, Simon Atangana in Russia, Emile Mbamba in Israel and Marcus Mokake in France’s Ligue 2 also scored this week.
Spain
There were two rounds of league play in Spain’s Primera Liga this week. Over the weekend Samuel Eto’o started at forward as Barcelona beat Real Betis 4-1. In the 9th minute Eto’o missed a penalty kick, as his shot rebounded off the post. Eto’o did score with a strong left footed shot from a tight angle in the 58th minute and added a 2nd goal, his 5th of the season in the 77th minute of play. Carlos Kameni was in goal for Espanyol as they lost 2-1 to Villarreal. Forward Pierre Achille Webo came on as a 60th minute substitute for Osasuna in their 2-0 victory over Cadiz. In the 2nd Division Daniel Ngom Kome played midfield as Ciudad de Murcia played a scoreless tie with Castellon.
Midweek Eto’o set up his team’s first goal in their 2-2 draw with Valencia. Kameni played in goal as Espanyol lost 1-0 to Racing Santander and Webo started at forward for Osasuna in their 3-1 loss to Zaragoza.
France
In France there also were two rounds of league play this past week. Over the weekend the big news was two teenagers Landry Nguemo and Stephane M’Bia starting for Nancy and Rennes respectively. Nguemo played a very good match in midfield for Nancy as his club defeated Troyes 2-1. M’Bia also received his first start of the new season for Rennes deputizing at right back for Jean Joel Perrier Doumbe in Rennes scoreless draw with Lens. M’Bia, normally a midfielder, was playing right back as Perrier Doumbe was rested for Rennes’ UEFA Cup match this week against Pierre Achille Webo’s Osasuna. Playing left back for Lens in the match against Rennes was Benoit Assou Ekotto who, despite the scoreless game, played a good match putting pressure down Rennes right defensive flank with his overlapping runs.
Another teenager, centerback Sebastien Bassong has been a more regular starter for his club and this weekend played in central defense as Metz lost 3-1 to Marseille. Achille Emana played in midfield for Toulouse in their 4-2 win over Strasbourg. Modeste Mbami played in midfield for PSG in their 0-0 tie with LeMans. Jean Makoun was given a slight breather ahead of Lille’s Champions League match this week and only came on as a sub in midfield in the 59th minute of Lille’s 2-0 win over St. Etienne. Bill Tchato also returned from his suspension coming on as a 63rd minute defnesive sub for Nice in their scoreless tie with Monaco.
In Ligue 2, Marcus Mokake relishing his return to attacking midfield this season scored for Sedan in the 12th minute of their 2-0 victory over Gueugnon. Eugene Ekobo played centerback for Creteil as they lost 1-0 to Amiens. Gilbert Bayiha was in goal for Grenoble in his club’s 2-1 win over Lorient and Bertin Tokene played centerback for Brest in their 1-1 draw with Valenciennes.
Midweek in Ligue 1, Achille Emana played a strong match in midfield for Toulouse as they beat Marseille 1-0. Jean Joel Perrier Doumbe played right back for Rennes in their 2-2 tie with Bordeaux. Modeste Mbami for PSG and Jean Makoun for Lille neutralized each other in their clubs’ 0-0 stalemate. Benoit Assou Ekotto played left back as Lens played a 1-1 match against champions Lyon, Sebastien Bassong was at centerback as Metz lost to Auxerre 2-1. Landry Nguemo came on as a 57th minute sub in midfield for Nancy as they defeated St. Etienne 2-0.
Midweek also saw preliminary round matches in the French League Cup for lower division teams. Alexis Ngambi started at centerback for Montpellier, but played only 6 minutes before leaving with an injury, as his club eventually won on penalties 6-5 after drawing 1-1 with Creteil Eugene Ekobo played centerback for Creteil in the match. Patrick Leugueun played centerback for Istres who lost 2-1 to Clermont. Bertin Tokene also played centerback for a club who lost, Brest who went down 1-0 to Chateauroux. Marcus Mokake came on as a sub for Sedan who eliminated Niort on penalties after a scoreless draw.
Germany
There also were two rounds of matches played last week in Germany. In the Bundesliga over the weekend was Hamburg’s big win over defending champions Bayern Munich, ending Bayern’s unbeaten streak which extended to last season.
Timothee Atouba played a solid match at left back for Hamburg in their 2-0 victory. Lucien Mettomo played centerback for Kaiserslautern as they lost 1-0 to Stuttgart. In Bundesliga 2, Marc Gouiffe a Goufan played defensive midfield for Paderborn as they beat Dynamo Dresden 2-0. Francis Kioyo started at forward for Energie Cottbus as they defeated Aue 1-0.
During the week Timothee Atouba was Hamburg’s left back in their 2-1 win over Stuttgart. Lucien Mettomo played 72 minutes at centerback for Kaiserslautern as they lost 2-0 to Mainz. In Bundesliga 2, Francis Kioyo reappeared after serving his 3 match suspension and played forward for Energie Cottbus as they won 1-0 to Burghausen. Marc Gouiffe a Goufan played 80 minutes at defensive midfield for Paderborn as they lost 2-1 to Greuther Furth.
Italy
In Italy’s Serie B, Alain Bono played right back for Ternana as they lost 2-0 to Atalanta. Thomas Job Iyock played right side midfield for Cremonese in their 1-1 draw with Arezzo.
England
Franck Songo’o, the teenage son of current Indomitable Lion goalkeeper coach and former Lion netminder Jacques Songo’o, made his professional debut this week for Portsmouth in England’s Premier League. The younger Songo’o, who came to Portsmouth from Barcelona’s youth team and who has represented France at the youth international level, came on as a sub in midfield for Portsmouth in the 73rd minute of their 1-0 loss to Bolton.
Lauren started at right back for Arsenal as they played a 0-0 tie with West Ham. Midfielder Eric Djemba Djemba came on as a substitute for Aston Villa in the 73rd minute of their 2-1 loss to runaway English league leaders Chelsea.
In the Championship, England’s 2nd tier league, on loan forward Vincent Pericard made his debut for Sheffield United coming on as a substitute in the 76th minute of his club’s 2-1 win over Derby. Mathias Doumbe played centerback for Plymouth in their scoreless draw with Southampton.
Turkey
Centerback Rigobert Song and midfielder Alioum Saidou started for Galatasaray as they continued their unbeaten streak in the new league season winning 2-1 over Samsunspor.
Herve Zengue played midfield for Ankaragucu as they won their first match of the new season 3-0 over Diyarbakirspor. Raymond Kalla played centerback for Sivasspor as they played a scoreless draw with Erciyesspor. Jean Effa Owona played forward for Malatyaspor in their 2-0 loss to Genclerbirligi. Souleymanou Hamidou was in goal for Denizlispor as they lost 2-1 to Gaziantepspor.
Greece
Guy Feutchine played in midfield and scored his first goal of the new season in the 20th minute for PAOK Salonika as his club defeated Egaleo 2-0. Joel Epalle also played midfield for his club Iraklis as they beat OFI Crete 1-0.
Belgium
Belgium’s league played two rounds last week. Over the weekend, Mathieu Assou Ekotto played midfield for Standard Liege as the current Belgian league leaders drew 2-2 with Germinal Beerschot. Playing forward for 67 minutes for Germinal Beerschot was Pius Ndiefi. Justice Wamfor played midfield for Racing Genk as they beat Cercle Bruges 3-1. Patrice Noukeu, who missed Mouscron’s last match with an ankle injury, played in midfield as his club beat La Louviere 2-1.
Midweek Mathieu Assou Ekotto played in midfield as Standard Liege beat last year’s champions FC Bruges 2-0. Justice Wamfor was in midfield for Racing Genk as they beat La Louviere 3-2. Pius Ndiefi played forward before being subbed out after 50 minutes as Germinal Beerschot lost 3-0 to Cercle Bruges.
Portugal
Rudolph Douala played left wing for Sporting Lisbon as they beat Vitoria Setubal 1-0. Forward Albert Meyong was kept off the scoreboard as his Belenenses club lost 2-0 to league leaders Porto. William Andem was in goal as Boavista beat Academica 2-1. In the 2nd Division, Yohanna Buba played centerback for Estoril as they lost 1-0 to Olhanense. Clement Beaud played midfield in the first half for Moreirense as they drew 1-1 with Gondomar.
Switzerland
Armand Deumi returned to Thun’s lineup after over a month out with injury. Deumi played right back for Thun as they lost 2-1 to Aarau in Swiss league play. The game winning goal in the match was scored by Aarau’s Cameroonian centerback Jean Pierre Tchetchoua in the 81st minute. Midfielder Augustine Simo entered as a sub for Aarau in the 82nd minute. Midweek Tchetchoua started at centerback as Aarau drew 1-1 with FC Zurich. Simo came on as a 72nd minute sub for Aarau.
Austria
Two rounds of league play took place last week in Austria. Over the weekend Ahamdou Rabihou came on as a sub at forward in the 64th minute for Sturm Graz as they beat Admira Wacker 3-2. Patrice Mbock entered as a sub at centerback for SV Pasching at the start of the 2nd half as they drew 0-0 with SV Ried.
Midweek, Rabihou came on as a 68th minute sub in Sturm Graz’ 2-2 draw with Rapid Vienna. Mbock came on in the 22nd minute for Pasching in their 2-0 win over Matterburg.
Israel
In Israel, Emile Mbamba came on as a 56th minute sub at forward for Maccabi Petah Tikva as they beat Bnei Sakhnin 2-1. The game winning goal for Petah Tikva came in the 65th minute from Mbamba. Joel Tchami also came on as a forward substitution in the 80th minute for his club Hapoel Kfar Saba as they defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv 1-0. Ernest Etchi played centerback for Ashdod in their 4-3 win over Hapoel Petah Tikva.
Russia
Forward Simon Atangana got his first start for Terek Grozny in Russia’s Premier League. Atangana scored Terek’s only goal in the 42nd minute as they lost 5-1 to Rubin Kazan. Terek remains in last place in the league. Jerry Christian Tchuisse played right back for FK Moscow as they lost 3-2 to Tom Tomsk.
Eastern Europe
There is another Cameroonian player in eastern Europe, 19 year old Yaounde born Armand Dubois Jankep plays midfield for Rabotnicki Skopje in Macedonia. This weekend Jankep played in midfield as Rabotnicki defeated Vlazrimi 2-1.
In Croatia, Mathias Chago played the first 45 minutes of Dinamo Zagreb’s 5-0 win over Kamen Ingrad. In Ukraine, Patrick Ebanda played midfield for Arsenal Kyiv as they beat Metallist Kharkiv 2-1. In Poland, Ferdinand Chifon played the first half of midfield as GKS Belchatow lost 3-0 to Odra. Francois Endene Elokan came on as a last minute sub for Pogon Szczecin in their 1-0 win over Gornik Leczna. In Bosnia, William Tabi played midfield for Siroki Brijeg as his club beat Zeljeznicar 1-0. In Latvia there was Cup play and Jean Paul Ndjoumeck played centerback as FK Ventspils beat league leaders Liepajags Metalurg 2-1 after extra time.
Scandinavia
In Norway, Gustave Bahoken played 70 minutes at centerback for Aalesund as they defeated Fredrikstad 4-1. Forward Patrick Suffo and his Odd Grenland teammates had a disastrous match as they lost 6-0 to Rosenborg. Somen A Tchoyi came on as a midfielder in the 54th minute for Odd Grenland. In Finland, Serge N’Gal came on as a 56th minute sub at forward for Inter Turku as they lost 1-0 over the weekend to Tampere United. Marc Ndikumade played 65 minutes in midfield for TP 47 as they lost 5-3 to TPS.
In Sweden, Joseph Elanga played left back for Malmo as they lost 2-1 to IFK Goteborg over the weekend. Midweek, Elanga played as Malmo defeated Helsingborgs 2-0.
South America
In Uruguay, there also were two matches this past week. Duplex Kamga continued serving his three match suspension for Wanderers. Alain Yombi played right back over the weekend as Plaza Colonia drew 1-1 with Defensor Sporting. Franck Daloko returned from his suspension and played centerback for Plaza in the match. Earlier in the week, Abdul Njankou returned from his injury layoff playing 45 minutes at centerback for Plaza as they lost 5-1 to Rampla Juniors. Alain Yombi played the full 90 minutes for Plaza.
North America
Alain Nkong returned to Colorado Rapids starting lineup after missing several games due to personal reasons. This past weekend Nkong played attacking midfield and helped set up Colorado’s opening goal in their 3-1 win over Chivas USA.
North Africa
In Algeria, Stephane Nankop and Jean Paul Yontcha both played forward as CABBA played a scoreless tie with ES Setif. Augustin Binya started in midfield as MC Oran and AS Chlef also played a 0-0 draw. Joseph Fotso came on as a sub at forward for MC Oran in the 61st minute.
Asia
In the 2nd leg of the Asian Champions League, Joseph Desire Job started at forward and missed several good chances to score as his Saudi club Al Ittihad defeated China’s Shandong 7-2 (8-3 on aggregate). In Asia’s version of the UEFA Cup, the AFC Cup, Cameroonian forward Julius Pongla Akosah scored in the 42nd minute as his club Hong Kong’s Sun Hei beat Lebanon’s Al Ahed 3-1 (3-2 on aggregate).
In the Indonesian league playoffs, centerback Herman Abanda scored on a header in the 66th minute as his club PMS Makassar drew 1-1 with Persija Jakarta, for whom forward Roger Batoum and centerback Guy Gerard Ambassa started. Persija won the round robin group play between themselves, PMS Makassar, Persebaya Surubaya and PSIS Semarang and will advance to play the Indonesian league championship against Persipura Jayapura who beat out Cameroonian forward Serge Emaleu‘s club Arema Malang and PSMS Medan and Persik Kediri.
