Cameroon coach Otto Pfister is to travel to Britain this week in an attempt to persuade defender Lauren to resume his international career.
Lauren has not played for Cameroon since the 2002 World Cup finals, spurning several coaches and official overtures in the five years since.
But the German coach is hoping to persuade the Portsmouth defender back for next month’s African Nations Cup in Ghana.
« I want to make contact and to get him to play, » said Pfister, who was named Cameroon coach in October.
He added that he planned to travel through Europe meeting Cameroon’s key players and checking their form.
Lauren, 30, was born in Cameroon but his connections with the country were otherwise tenuous.
His parents are from Equatorial Guinea and soon after his birth the family moved to Spain, where he started his career.
Cameroon offered Lauren an international career before the 1998 World Cup finals.
He won two Nations Cup titles with the team in 2000 and 2002 and a total of 24 caps.
The Nations Cup finals start on 20 January and Cameroon are drawn in Group C with holders Egypt, Sudan and Zambia.
