CAMEROON midfielder Modeste M’Bami has alerted Leeds United boss Peter Reid to his abilities with his performances in the Confederations Cup. Planetfootball.com can reveal that the hard-running Sedan midfielder caught Reid’s eye when the Elland Road boss attended matches during the group stages of the competition in France.
Although some reports claim Hidetoshi Nakata was the manager’s chief target during his trip across The Channel, it is understood that M’Bami made a positive impression and has already attracted some interest from Leeds.
Marseille appear to be Japanese international Nakata’s likeliest destination, and he would prove too expensive for the Yorkshiremen, even if they do sell Harry Kewell and Paul Robinson.
M’Bami represents a more realistic option, particularly after Sedan’s relegation, but the 20-year-old has set his sights on remaining in France.
« I would prefer to remain in Le Championnat for a year, even if there are options with foreign clubs, » he stressed.
« There are the Germans of Stuttgart and the English club Leeds who appear interested.
« But my priority is France. »
The tough tackler earned 11 yellow cards in only 34 games last term, but has made a midfield place his own at Sedan.
He has still yet to score since arriving from Dynamo Douala three years ago, but is popular due to his defensive work.
« I am delighted to take part in this adventure with Cameroon, » he enthused. « Especially as the season with Sedan was very painful.
« I have already received offers, the club too, » he told But.
« Rennes approached Sedan with an offer of €5 million, but this is not my choice. I hope to play in European competition.
« I was approached by Lyon in January, and I believe they still follow me, but I do not want to sit on the bench.
« This is why I am perhaps more attentive to offers from Marseille or Sochaux. »
