A photo exhibition of Roger Milla’s career began in Yaounde over the weekend. Milla, selected as Africa’s footballer of the 20th century, played international football from 1972 – 1994 and featured in three World Cup finals for the Indomitable Lions.
« It’s an honour for me to see Cameroonian youths follow my footprints, » said Milla while walking through the exhibition hall.
Titled « On the footprints of Roger Milla, » the pictures would be displayed from 9 to 16 May.
The pictures were taken between 1981 to 2003, with Milla supplying over 40 pictures from his archive.
« The aim of this exhibition is to acknowledge all the work Roger Milla has done for Cameroonian youth, » said Bebena Jean-Claude, president of MOJAS, the youth organisation behind the display.
« It’s an honour for me to see Cameroonian youths follow my footprints » Roger Milla.
« Roger Milla today represents a source of inspiration to all youths who wish to succeed. »
Copies of the photographs will be sold to the public at the end of the exhibition, with the money going to charity.
Milla first won the African Footballer of the Year title in 1976 and regained it fourteen years later, after leading the Indomitable Lions to the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup at the ripe age of 38.
In 1994, he became, at 42, the oldest player in World Cup history to score a goal, getting Cameroon’s lone strike in a 1-6 loss to Russia.
