Cameroon legend Roger Milla has come out in support of Sepp Blatter – over his countryman Issa Hayatou.
Africa’s Player of the Century Roger Milla has embarrassed fans by declaring his support for Sepp Blatter against Cameroon’s Issa Hayatou in the race for the Fifa presidency.
Milla was widely expected by fans in Yaounde to come all out in favour of his compatriot.
But in an interview with BBC Sports Online, Milla revealed the dilemma he faced.
« It’s not going to be easy for us who are already friends of Blatter to leave him just like that to support an African, even if he’s my brother, » the Cameroon legend said.
That statement has been interpreted to mean Milla will support Blatter, outraging some in Cameroon’s media.
The Herald proclaimed in its editorial that, « It is shocking that roving ambassador Roger Milla, who ought to go globe-trotting to canvass for support for Hayatou, is instead campaigning openly for incumbent Sepp Blatter.
« Milla’s rhetoric has done no good to Hayatou and Cameroon. In fact, it is hostile. »
