JOSEPH JOB is giving up the chance to play in the African Cup of Nations in order to push his claims for a place in the Boro first team.
The 26-year-old striker, who recently returned to action after a lengthy absence with a knee injury, had been expected to travel to Tunisia later this month to represent Cameroon in the prestigious competition.
But with his contract up for renewal in the summer, he has now decided to stay and try to help solve manager Steve McClaren’s striking problems.
He said: « After a long-term injury going to the African tournament would have been too early. I prefer to stay with Middlesbrough. »
McClaren is delighted to be able to call upon Job’s services as the club enters a crucial period.
« It’s an important time for Joseph because his contract is up in the summer, » he said.
« He needs to prove himself. We know he’s a good player with a lot of attributes. »
McClaren said the club would not be opening talks with any of the players who’s current deals are up for renewal until February and March.
