Manchester United have confirmed that captain Roy Keane has a torn hamstring and will miss at least six weeks.
Keane is now set to miss the Premiership and Champions League title conclusions and is doubtful to be fit in time to be named for the Irish World Cup squad in May.
Keane was stretchered off at the end of the first half of 2-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna that put United close to a semi final but he is racing against time to be fit for the Champions League final on May 15th should the English champions reach the final.
Keane missed United’s 1999 European Cup win through suspension and may not be fit to play any part in the final this season.
But United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says midfielders David Beckham and Juan Sebastian Veron should be fit to face Deportivo La Coruna next week in the decisive second leg of the quarter final.
Ferguson described the injury as « a massive blow » for his side’s title chances.
