Confidence in the Cameroon camp continues to grow following the Indomitable Lions’ 2-2 draw with England.
The Indomitable Lions received glowing praise following their performance in the match, which they only failed to win due to a Robbie Fowler header in the last minute of injury time.
And the result seems to have given the side – who have lost only once all year, in a friendly against Denmark earlier this month – even greater self-belief.
« I think we showed that we can beat anybody, » said right-back Lauren, of English club Arsenal.
« I believe this team can do something. »
Cameroon’s best performance at the World Cup to date was in 1990, when they reached the quarter-finals with victories over Argentina, Romania and Colombia.
That legendary side, which included heroes such as Milla and Oman-Byik, could finally see their achievements eclipsed, Lauren believes.
« The Cameroon national team can do something this World Cup – we know that and we will try to do it. »
Ready for action
Meanwhile fans and the media in Cameroon are agreed on the formidable performance of the Indomitable Lions, though they regret the fact that Cameroon « threw away » the game in the last minute when the lack of concentration caused England to equalise.
The fans were already celebrating victory and the splendid show of the team when Rowbie Fowler headed in the equaliser.
The government daily, Cameroon Tribune was happy to announce that in the game « Mboma reassures fans » and the Lions are « ready for action. »
For Le Messager, the Lions have calmed the fans who were very worried after the 1-2 defeat to Denmark.
« The Lions dominated England, forcing them to run behind the score line, » the paper said.
« In spite of the hesitant defence, that caused the English equaliser, the Lions have declared their intention: to be front role players in the World Cup ».
