A senior Cameroon football official said they have not been approached by Nigeria’s World Cup bid team, despite being named as one of the countries that would host matches under Nigeria’s co-hosting plans.
The deputy secretary-general of Fecafoot, Prince Ndoki Mukete, said all he knew about Nigeria’s plan was what he had read in the media.
« From what I’ve read in the papers, Nigeria intends to involve Cameroon and other countries, » he said.
« But the Nigeria Football Association has not yet contacted Fecafoot, » he added.
Nigeria’s bid includes proposals to play some of the group games in Benin, Togo, Ghana and Cameroon.
But only Nigeria would automatically qualify for the finals as hosts.
Mukete said he was worried that six countries were bidding for the tournament.
« I am very disturbed as an African. South Africa narrowly lost the 2006 bid. Suddenly we’re divided, with many countries thinking of hosting the World Cup. »
He said that all of Africa should throw its weight being South Africa’s bid.
Cameroon has made no indication as to which African bid it will back.
