African champions Cameroon have received an invitation to play a friendly against World Champions Brazil, the country’s football federation have confirmed.
The Indomitable Lions have also been invited to play surprise World Cup quarter-finalists Mexico.
The news was disclosed by football federation president Iya Mohamed in Yaounde, during a televised debate on the performance of the Indomitable Lions in Korea and Japan.
Mohamed made the disclosure in his bid to defend the point that the Lions’ image had not suffered following their disappointing World Cup show.
« Our performance was not a disaster, though it was disappointing. We are still considered amongst the best in the world, » Mohamed said.
That is why world champions, Brazil want to play against us. »
Debate
Both games are expected to be played in October.
To back Mohamed’s defence of Cameroon’s image, some commentators said that at 17th position, the Lions were still the first African team in Fifa’s monthly rankings.
Mohamed also confirmed the two-year deal to keep Winfried Schafer as manager of the side.
« As we correct our past errors and thrive to build a more solid team, we think that Mr. Schafer should continue as coach. »
« It’s not productive to always change coaches, » Mohamed said.
