Cameroon are the only African team with the quality to reach the second round of the World Cup, according to African Football Confederation (CAF) secretary general Mustafa Fahmi.
“The Lions can shine – the others face elimination in the group phase,” he told onefootball.com. “They have a very good chance of progressing to later stages.”
“Cameroon’s physical fitness is outstanding. Most of the players come from top European leagues and have great tactical awareness.
“Their opponents in the first round in Group E – Germany, Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Ireland – are physically strong but are unlikely to be able to match the Lions.”
Fahmi holds out less hope for Africa’s other representatives. “Nigeria and Senegal are in tough groups while Tunisia and South Africa are below-par,” he explained.
“The Bafana Bafana were poor at the African Nations Cup where Mali knocked them out in the second round. The Tunisians didn’t even make it past the first phase.”
