Cameroon are the only African team with the quality to reach the second round of the World Cup, according to African Football Confederation (CAF) secretary general Mustafa Fahmi.
« The Lions can shine – the others face elimination in the group phase, » he told onefootball.com. « They have a very good chance of progressing to later stages. »
« Cameroon’s physical fitness is outstanding. Most of the players come from top European leagues and have great tactical awareness.
« Their opponents in the first round in Group E – Germany, Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Ireland – are physically strong but are unlikely to be able to match the Lions. »
Fahmi holds out less hope for Africa’s other representatives. « Nigeria and Senegal are in tough groups while Tunisia and South Africa are below-par, » he explained.
« The Bafana Bafana were poor at the African Nations Cup where Mali knocked them out in the second round. The Tunisians didn’t even make it past the first phase. »
