Cameroon have beaten Egypt 3-1 in their opening Group B match at the All Africa Games in Nigeria. Egypt took the lead in the 19th minute but Cameroon came back in the second half with three goals to secure the win.
In a rain soaked match Paul Essola scored the equaliser for Cameroon from the penalty spot.
The Lion’s Geremi Ndjock grabbed the second when he followed up to put away the rebound after his own shot had rattled the Egyptian post.
Despite some late pressure from Egypt, Cameroon’s Eyoum Ekwala made sure of the win with a 78th minute header.
The other Group B match sees Algeria taking on Ghana also in Calabar.
In other matches Nigeria started their campaign on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Zambia in Group A.
The other two teams in Group A Senegal and South Africa battled to a 1-1 draw, both matches were in Bauchi.
All the teams at the games are Under 23 squads.
Women
In the women’s competition Nigeria got their campaign underway with an emphatic 5-0 win over Zimbabwe.
The win for the Nigerians puts behind them the disappointment of the recent world cup where their campaign ended with 3 losses out of three, 11 goals conceded and none scored.
In the other Group A encounter on Friday Cameroon easily beat Ethiopia by three goals to nil, both matches took place in Lagos.
On Saturday in Group B South Africa beat Mali 2-0 and the Congo beat Algeria 5-2 in Kaduna.
