The Cameroon Lionesses have picked a ticket for the semi-finals of the ongoing African Women’s Championships in Nigeria, following a 2-0 victory over Mali On Saturday, 4 November.
After drawing one all with the DR Congo in the first group B game and losing to Ghana 2-1 in the second match, Cameroon badly needed to defeat Mali to stay alive in the competition.
Head coach Charles Kandem thereby ensured that there was no early exit for Cameroon by galvanising the ladies to victory over Mali.
The win enabled Cameroon stand second in Group B with four points, one ahead of Mali, but five behind Ghana. The DR Congo finished bottom
Ghana harvested all nine possible points from the three group games, the last being a 3-1 win over the DR Congo on Saturday.
The semi-finals parings for 7 November are: Nigeria versus Cameroon in Warri on 7 November and Ghana versus South Africa in Oghara.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are the super favourites, but the game offers the Indomitable Lionesses an opportunity for sweet revenge. The Lionesses only lost in the final of the last edition to Nigeria.
Since the first edition of the African Women’s Championships in 1998, Cameroon, Ghana and South Africa have been struggling to dethrone Nigeria, who have won all four previous editions of the African title.
