Cameroon’s head coach Winfried Schafer has refused to comply with official demands to live in the country. The German trainer believes that Europe is the best place to stay, as the majority of the player in the Indomitable Lions are based there.
He said the Cameroon government was renovating a villa for him in the capital Yaounde, but failed to confirmed if he would live there.
« My stay in Europe is for the best interest of the national team players, all of whom reside and play there.
« They have numerous problems and frequently need my advice. I also consult their club officials to evaluate their form, » Schafer told Cameroonian journalists.
Schafer has never spent a full month in Yaounde since he was recruited as manager in 2001.
He argued that it was easier to organise training camps in Europe and refuted claims that his decision to remain in Europe has been a financial burden to the football federation.
« I pay for my European trips to meet the players and solve their problems. »
Schafer also denied claims that local players have been denied the chance to play for the national team because he failed to watch matches in the domestic league.
« I frequently go to local competitions to detect new talents who could subsequently join the national team. »
Schafer’s resolve not to stay in Yaounde is taking its toll on his popularity amongst fans.
Following a string of poor results by the Lions, some supporters are calling for his dismissal.
